I know, because my daughter was diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. At the time, I was told it would take years of therapy and a prescription medication regime to deal with her oppositional and defiant personality. I was also told that once my daughter became a teen, I could expect her defiance to go to a whole new level and her medications would be adjusted as necessary. I decided there was no way I was going to “accept my daughter’s behavior as a lifestyle " and there was no way I was going to put her on long-term drug therapy, so I began searching for a program to help me change my daughters defiant thought processes. I knew that if I could change the way my daughter thinks, the results would last forever. It was just a matter of finding a cognitive behavior program designed for kids her age. But the therapist knew of no such programs for kids with ODD and could only suggest drugs and therapy. (Job security, I totally understand.) So after reading everything about Oppositional Defiant Disorder that I could get my hands on, I created a program myself! Using this simple behavior modification program I was able to "rewire" my daughters thought process. In doing so, I was able to gain back my sanity and eliminate the meltdowns associated with my daughters ODD. In less than 18 months, I went from parenting a child who left me physically and emotionally exhausted at the end of each and every day, to parenting a wonderful and well behaved daughter with no signs of ODD. |

Now that I have your attention, let me give you a little background on the C.A.R.S. for Kids behavior modification program.
C.A.R.S. for Kids is a behavior modification program designed by a parent (me) who was exasperated because I could not find an affordable and tangible product to help me deal with my daughters Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
Shortly after my daughter turned 3, I noticed her behavior starting to change. By the time she was 4 she was having temper tantrums (meltdowns) that rocked my world. If you have a child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder you know what I am talking about.
Meltdowns are NOT like normal temper tantrums. During a meltdown, your child generally looses complete control of their mental facilities and they JUST GO NUTS.
And it can last for hours...
My daughters meltdowns typically occurred every night and lasted 2 – 3 hours, in which time there was screaming, hitting, biting, violence, destruction, chaos and general mayhem.
It was CRAZY!!!
After about a year and a half of this behavior, I was at my wits end! I started searching the internet for information on temper tantrums. (At the time, I just thought they were bionic temper tantrums.)
I ran across descriptions of ODD and knew immediately it was what my daughter had. In order to confirm my suspicion, I took my daughter to a therapist for a diagnosis. Many sessions later, the therapist did diagnose my daughter with ODD.
She said I could expect my daughter’s behavior to get worse and I should baton down the hatches because once my daughters hormones kicked, I could expect her defiance to go to a whole new level. She stated that medication and therapy is the standard course of action for kids with ODD.
I was devastated.
There was no way I was going to “accept my daughter’s behavior as a lifestyle" and I certainly was not going to put her on drugs if I could find ANY way of avoiding it!
So, it was back to the drawing board. I began searching for a tangible program that my daughter and I could use at home. Something I could use to "purposefully" reprogram her combative personality and stop her meltdowns.
In my search for an actual product, I found only information. I could NOT find a tangible program that I could afford and that I could use at home with my daughter.
After reading two books in particular, I was struck with an idea! I created a program which consisted of rewarding my daughter with credits for positive behavior. In exchange for the credits she would have to purchase any of the typical things that kids have, using her credits. I turned EVERYTHING into a reward and if she wanted anything what-so-ever, she needed credits to spend!
I created two lists (a credit list and a reward list) and each evening we went over both lists. My daughter was rewarded with credits for her positive behaviors and in turn, she spent her credits on rewards (and remember, I turned EVERYTHING into a reward).
And you know what happened?
In less than 30
days I had a different child
NO
KIDDING!
There was a HUGE difference in my daughters behavior, just in the first 30 days!

She was going to bed - without melting down.

She was getting into her pajamas - without melting down.

She was taking a bath - without melting down (HOLY SMOKES!)
She was remembering to brush her teeth - without being reminded.
She was remembering to wash her hands - after going to the bathroom.
She was taking her dishes to the sink - after she finished her meals.
She was putting her clothes in the hamper - not leaving them on the floor.

She was getting dressed in the mornings - without her AM meltdown.
She was taking NO for an answer - without melting down (This was HUGE)
She was going through her entire nighttime routine - without a meltdown!
I
was AMAZED at
the transformation. 
What was the end result?
Using the C.A.R.S. for Kids system, her meltdowns were eliminated and her defiance was reduced by about 90%.
If you were to meet my daughter today, you would have NO IDEA that she had been challenged with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
